never thought this day would come

Sadly, Marble King's powers of lofting and angling were deemed insufficient to earn him a place in the Legion of Super-Heroes.

While I've never had the (dubious) honor of knowing a bona fide "Marble King" (as my childhood peers were more inclined to view marbles as ideal slingshot ammunition), I am on friendly terms with the former Exchequer of Pogs.

The Troggs - Marbles and Some Gum (from Mixed Bag, 1968) - Thematically similar to the J. Geils Band's "Centerfold," but minus the softcore overtones. Is it just me, or does it also sound like a lost Davy Jones track from the Monkees?

In a similiar vein, how does The Who's "Pinball Wizard" have any popularity? I mean, pinball, for God's sake!

Hey! I like pinball (or at least Visual pinMAME's simulation thereof).

I also like The Who, but have never warmed up to Tommy, as it perfectly represents all of rawk's worst and most self-indulgent tendencies.

No, no, BA. I agree with both. I like to play pinball, especially after a beer or two. But you hear Townsend pouring his soul into those opening riffs, electrifying and thundering, and then Daltrey starts singing about pre-Pac Man. It's like seeing Michaelangelo greatest fresco, on the side of a hot dog stand. That wedding of artistry with the lyrical content, it's wrong.

Speaking of being wrong, you're kidding about Tommy representing the "worst," yes? I mean, The Who's most serious challenger for that title then would be... The Who, "Quadrophenia" with Pink Floyd's "The Wall" coming close behind. And both "Tommy" and "The Wall" were made into movies. Jesus Christ Superstar! How did that happen?!

But I'm not all bitter like you BA. I've always felt The Who were far and away superior to The Stones. Plus, The Who kept me going during in the mid-80s when in a New York City high schoo, surrounded by disco-lovin' Travolta-wannabes, they proclaimed "Rock Is Dead, Long Live Rock."

I dunno, I have an easier time accepting Mod nostalgia wank over whatever the hell Tommy was supposed to be.

We don't mention T-- W--- here, and yes, The Who beat the Stones by a wide margin, even if I think "Paint It Black" and "Jumping Jack Flash" are better than anything The Who ever recorded.

I did know a real life 'Marble King' a mate of mine was so hot at marbles he had a Doctor's valise rammed with all his marbles, which he paid a lackey (in marbles) to carry around for him.

He's the Headmaster of a local private school now.

PS I always feel The Who are The Clash to the Small Faces Sex Pistols
